Daily Leader Newspaper: Final Rites for Marshall Allen Davis, 84 years old retired farmer of Rt. 5, Brookhaven, were held Saturday afternoon in Brookhaven with burial in the Mt. Zion Church of Christ Cemetery. The Rev. Norman Miller and the Rev. Buford Stewart conducted the rites.
Mr. Davis, a native of Franklin County, the son of Asa and Celia Allred Davis, died at his residence September 19 ( 1968 ). He had lived most of his life in Lincoln County. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife, Mrs Eldora Case Davis, two sons, Brady Davis, Brookhaven, Prentiss Davis, Groves Texas, five daughters, Mrs Luther McGee, Miss Hazel Davis, Mrs Daisy Pogue, all of Brookhaven, Mrs Jake Laird, Groves Texas, Mrs Clara Ratcliff, Jackson; three sisters, Mrs Lela Haire, Rayville, LA, Mrs Tina Powell, Smithdale and Mrs June Mayton, Biloxi, 16 grandchildren and 13 great, grandchildren.
From an article in the Franklin Advocate Jan 1981 reminiscing with Mack Arnold, a long time logger with the Homochitto Lumber Company; " Mr. Arnold, who will soon be 80 years old started out as a boy peddling sugar cane and " boiled peanuts " to the hands along the dummy line railroad and in the logging camp. In 1919 when he was 19, he went to work on a " real job " with the steam skidder crew. Mr. Mack, as his local friends call him, recalls that the company began building in 1911 and opened in 1912. The first logging camp was on Magee's Creek, he recalls. They brought in 40 pairs of mules to skid logs. There was a race to see who could put the first log on the dummy line track. He remembers clearly that it was Allen Davis who got the first log with a pair of mules named " Bill and Mike".
Allen and Dora lived several years on the farm of Isaac Davis, Allen's grandfather, just south of Mt. Gilead. Ola and Brady were born there. Then they moved to the Percy Reed place, about a half-mile south of Curt Rushing's house. Myrtle was born there. Then they moved to the Laura Byrd place, where Archie Allbriton currently lives. Hazel and Clara were born there. On January 1, 1919 they moved to the current Home place. Brady walked over, pulling their wagon containing Clara, who was holding the clock. Myrtle walked with them carrying their cardboard lunch pails. Hazel rode over on a load of corn driven by her uncle, Commodore Davis.
Allen loved to whistle, mostly hymns. His favorite ones always seemed to have " rock " in the title; Rock of Ages, The Solid Rock, Shelter in Time of Storm, The Sheltering Rock, The Rock that is Higher Than I, There Stands a Rock.
