Notes for Lawrence Wilkinson:
Lawrence Wilkinson was the first of our ancestors to come to America. He held a Captain's commission in the Army of King Charles Ist and loyalist. As history records, Cromwell overthrew the King and at the surrender of Newcastle, October 22, 1644, he was taken prisoner. All his estates were confiscated and he was forced to leave England for America. He arrived in Providence Rhode Island in 1645. Upon his arrival he was signed the Civil Compact and received a gift of 25 acres of land ( wilderness ). Captain Lawrence as he was called by his townsmen was admitted as an original " Proprietors of Providence " and in laying out of the land and in the draft of subsequent subdivisions on the east and west side of the seven mile line. His name appears with other purchasers of the town. He acquired a large amount of real estate. In 1659 he was elected as a member of the Legislature which met in Portsmouth.
