Richard Holcombe II had a plantation in King Wiliam County, Va. before 1723.
Richard Holcombe III was one of four Holcombe brothers, including Benjamin Holcombe, John Holcombe and Joseph Holcombe, who on 4 October 1754 were on the Muster Roll of Grantville County, N.C. as a member of Captain Shugan Jones Company of Colonel William Eaton's regiment.
A tradition persists that Richard Holcomb III, Benjamin Holcomb, John Holcombe and Joseph Holcombe of Granville County, N.C., and old 96 District S.C., left and older brother James in Va who had inherited all the lands of their father, Richard Holcomb II. Such lands appear to have been in King William Brunswick or Amelia (later Prince Edward) Co., Va.
These four younger brothers left Prince Edward Co., soon after their fathers death and were followed shortly by their cousin Grimes Holcomb. These five moved again between 1759 and 1791 to old 96 District, S.C.. Inheritance of land in Va. was then under English law of primogeniture, which excluded all but the oldest son from inheriting any of a father's land. These 4 younger sons had to find much land because of them having large families.
The relationship and association of these 4 with each other and with descendants of Holbombes of the same SC districts, Kentucky and other locations suggests closes than it was with other branches of Holcombes of early Virginia.
Children of Richard Holcombe and ? Littleberry/Kinchen/Neville are:
* 5. i. Richard Holcombe5 3RD, b. 1716, Prince Edward Co, Virginia; d. Aft. January 22, 1794, Laurens District, South Carolina.
* ii. James Holcombe, b. 1715, Probably Prince Edward Co, Virginia.
* iii. Benjamin Holcombe, b. 1718, Probably Prince Edward Co, Virginia; d. Abt. 1795, Union Co, South Carolina.
* iv. John Holcombe, b. 1720, Probably Prince Edward Co, Virginia; d. August 17, 1786, Union Co, South Carolina.
* v. Joseph Holcombe, b. 1723, Probably Prince Edward Co, Virginia; d. 1810.
