Descendants of Samuel Jackson1 Sorrells

Samuel Jackson Sorrells was born about 1820 in North Carolina. He married Matilda Watson November 19, 1840 in Murray County, Georgia. She was born about 1822 in North Carolina.

( Notes for Samuel Sorrells and Matilda Watson: )

Samuel & Matilda have never been found on the Georgia Federal Census even though they were married & had children there. I personaly have search the records from 1800 to 1900 and have not found them.
Note that there are several spellings to the Sorrells name. Sorell, Sorrel, Sorrell, Sural, Sorrells, Surals.
Fact #1: November 15, 1840, Thomas O. Austin C.C.O. issued the marriage license.
Fact #2: November 19, 1840, Eli T. Hanes, Justice of the Peace performed the marriage. Marriage: November 19, 1840, Murray County, Georgia. Marriage license: Book #1, Page #65 has the date of July 14, 1840. But, a copy of the marriage license from Murray County, Georgia shows the license was dated November 15, 1840 and the marriage date as November 19, 1840.

Thomas Richard Sorrells and his family ( 1st wife ) was listed on the 1870 Ellijay Gilmer Co, Georgia Federal Census as listed below:

On this census there is a mark made showing that Thomas was in school at the age of 22. This is wrong (of course ). There was a 6 year old girl listed above his name in another family and the mark was to be for her, not Thomas.

Personal notes on this Census Records: Past census records show that Thomas and his wife Louisa could not read and write. Some dates are wrong from past and present census records but remember this was common and also depends on who was giving the information to the census taker and the census taker themselves. But it is believed by me that this is the Thomas Richard Sorrells Families without a doubt. Also Nancy Louisa Thompson Sorrells died 9 months after this census was taken on March 28, 1901.

*****************************************

Thomas was a patient/resident at the Eastern Oklahoma State Hospital in Vinita, Craig Co, Oklahoma at the time of his death. This was a mental hospital that is still in operation today. Thomas lived at the hospital from July 17, 1919 until the time of his death on January 10, 1923 ( 3 years, 5 months and 24 days ). On Thomas's death certificate his birthdate is listed as February 22, 1855, this is wrong and according to the Federal Census he was born in 1848. Thomas first appeared on the Gilmer Co, Georgia census June 5, 1860 showing his age at that time to be 11 years old. It has been reported that Thomas and both his wives Nancy and Cella are buried in the Chelsea Cemetery in Chelsea, Rogers Co, Oklahoma. I personally have not been able to verify this. Thomas died on January 10, 1923 at 3:15 p.m. from bronchus pneumonia that he had had for 9 days. Thomas Richard Sorrells was also known as T.R. Sorrells

( More about Priscilla V. Holcombe )

Look on the 1870 Cherokee Co, Georgia Federal Census under George W. Holcombe for Priscilla V. Holcombe listed at age 10.

( Personal Thought or Food for Thought )
As you can see above I do not have Thomas and his family listed for the 1880 Federal Census. While searching the records I did come across a family that is similar to Thomas's family in Town Creek Gilmer Co, Georgia
Sorrels James R.- Self- White- Male- Married- Blacksmith- Can Not read or write- Born in Georgia- Father born in Georgia- Mother born in Georgia
Louisa E.- White- Female- 30 yrs old- Wife- Married- Keeping House- Can Not read or write- Born in Georgia- Father born in ?- Mother born in North Carolina
Samuel D.- White- Male- 13 yrs old- Son- Single- At home- Attended school- Can not read or write- Born in Georgia- Father born in Georgia- Mother born in Georgia
Martha T.- White- Female- 9 yrs old- Daughter- Single- Attended school- Born in Georgia- Father born in Georgia- Mother born in Georgia
Lucretia- White- Female- 7 yrs old- Daughter- Single- Attended school- Born in Georgia- Father born in Georgia- Mother born in Georgia
James M.- White- Male- 5 yrs old- Son- Single-Born in Georgia- Father born in Georgia- Mother born in Georgia
John W.- White- Male- 4 yrs old- Son- Single- Born in Georgia- Father born in Georgia- Mother born in Georgia
Sarah M.- White- Female- 2 yrs old- Daughter- Single- Born in Georgia- Father born in Georgia- Mother born in Georgia

On the 1870 Gilmer Co, Georgia it said that Thomas & Louisa could not read & write. On the 1880 it said that James R. & Louisa could not read & write. I have found that Nancy Louisa Thompson Sorrells father was born in Pennsylvania & her mother born in North Carolina. Louisa E. Sorrels fathers birth place is listed as unknown and her mother born in North Carolina. Both set of parents had 6 children by the 1880 census. Thomas's daughter Sarah was born in 1878, so was James's daughter Sarah. Thomas's son John W. was born in 1876, so was James's son John W.. Thomas's son Samuel D. was born in 1867, so was James's son Samuel D.. Both also had son's named James M. and daughter's named Martha. Thomas had a daughter named Tresa A., James had a daughter named Lucretia.
