Green R. Duke served in the Confederate Army. He fought at the BATTLE OF CHICKAMAUGA two times being injured both times.
Notes on the Green R. Duke Family by Douglas P. Reid;
Green's family settled in the Central Grove District ( Armuchee ) of Floyd County, near his brothers, James and David, sometime before 1860. He donated land and $90.00 for the Pleasent Valley North Baptist Church. His son Martin, later gave land to the school board for a school house, the Central Grove School or " Duke School House ", on 19 May 1900. Julia Ann Duke's husband, William McKenzie, was a preacher at the Floyd Springs Baptist Church above Armuchee. Green R. Duke's property in 1890 consisted of 151 acres, a black mare, a mule, 2 milk cows, 5 hogs, 53 sheep, 2 wagons, farming and household items. He farmed cotten. Green bought the Armuchee property ( 160 acres ) from his brother, David, on 4 December 1852. He was present in a land transaction of Thomas Duke on 6 January 1850. ( Thomas was 47 in 1850, and was probably an uncle or brother ). On 20 January 1862 Green R. was appointed administrator for his brother, David's, estate. In the Civil War, Green R. Duke was injured three times, and as a result, he required pain medication for the rest of his life. His tombstone inscription says he was " a good man ".

Green's second wife is thought to be a Dellinger, and married a Holland, who died in the Civil War. Third Corporal Jno. S. Holland, Central Grove District, this part of Floyd County was settled in 1854. Jimmie Duke and his family being the first settlers.
Mr Duke bought 160 acres of land at the intersection of the O'Brien and Central Grove roads for a gun valued at $25.00. His son, Lumpkin Duke, was a prominent man in the neighborhood and raised a large family, the boys which engaged in the sawmill business. Two of his sons, Lumpkin and Tom, are now living in Rome and are still engaged in the same kind of work. Jim Duke's brother Green R. Duke, settled on what is now known as Green Duke place in 1860. His son, Martin M. Duke, who is now living in this neighborhood, is the oldest living descendant of the original settlers. Martin M. Duke gave the land on which the Central Grove School was built in 1900. The institution was known as Duke School House for many years. Mrs. Henry O. Littlejohn ( Mary Emeline Duke ), one of his daughters, lives near the school. Henry O. Littlejohn, who served the Berry School for the longest continous peroid of any of its employees, in charge of much of the carpentry work and the superintendent who built all of the log houses.

Military Service: Notes sent to me March 5, 2005 by Dennis Duke.
The Green R.(Robert) Duke from Butts County is probably a relative, 3rd cousin via one of Henry Duke's other sons. But our Green was Lieutenant Green R. Duke of Co. C., 1st Regiment, Georgia State Line (Floyd Infantry). The following was provided to me by the great-great grand daughter of Capt. John Paulden Duke, CSA, Mrs. Gloria Ramsaur. John Paulden Duke was Green's nephew.
Green R. Duke joined many others from Floyd County to fight during the Civil War. In November 1862, he is listed as a 4th Lieutenant, Company C, 1st Regiment , Georgia State Line, "Floyd Infantry." After the war was over Green R. along with three of his Duke nephews: James Lumpkin, John Paulden and Allen Gregory were members of Floyd County Camp #368 UCV. He was injured three times during the war and as a result, required medication for pain the remainder of his life.
Green R. married a second time (ca 1864) to Harriet Dilllinger Holland and they were the parents of nine children: Green Reginald Jr., David Edmund, Eugene, Lucy Lee, Unetta, Artelia, Charles Wright, Joanna, and William Dison. These children also had large families, numbering sixty grandchildren.
In 1890, Green R's property consisted of 151 acres ( 9 acres had been donated to the church), a black mare, a mule, two milk cows, 5 hogs, 53 sheep, two wagons, farming and household items.
Lieutenants are the most influential officers in the military. But you can't make Captain without going through Lieutenant and it does represent a special trust and position of responsibility not given to most members of the military.
" Thank You Dennis "
